Kitchen Fire!

When I was 2 years old, I started my first toaster fire.  There would be three more to come later on in my childhood.  When a neighbor bought me a toaster as housewarming gift when I left for college, my dad told her that he believed it might be a "house burning gift," given my history with toaster fires.

Unfortunately, it seems that Jackson is following in his mother's footsteps.  This morning he ran into my room screaming and crying and told me through his tears that there was a big fire in the kitchen.  He has been wrong on this sort of thing in the past (like thinking that a piece of string is a spider and freaking out about it), but I thought I had better run and check just in case. When I got to the kitchen, sure enough, there was a paper towel in flames on top of a flaming baby bib.  A couple of crackers were burning as well.  I put it out without any trouble, but it freaked me out that he had tried to make toast while I was sleeping.  Maxwell has been making his own toast for a long time now, but Jackson has never tried.  I was just glad that he had not covered the bread in an inch of butter before putting it into the toaster like I had with my first toaster fire.

I asked him how the fire started, and he showed me a burn on his finger and said that he had tried to get the toast out of the toaster with a napkin when the fire started.  I told him that only mommy can make his toast, and then went over some toaster safety skills just in case he tries it again while I am sleeping, like not putting napkins in the toaster, not sticking forks or knives in it, and not buttering the bread before putting it in the toaster.  I made him run his hand under water, put some burn ointment on it, then gave him a Lightening Mcqueen band-aid.  He is very excited to show daddy his band-aid when he gets home from work.
