Last week, a thief stole my toddler carseat, right out of my carport in my gated community. We still have only one car, which Chauncey has to drive to work each day, so when a friend offered to pick me up for a playdate, I had to take the carseats out. Granted, I should have carried them into the house, but carrying two carseats and two kids up to the second floor didn't sound like fun, so I left them in the carport.
When I discovered the carseat was stolen, I put up signs asking for its return. (My infant carseat is so old and disgusting that nobody in their right mind would steal it--so only the toddler carseat was stolen). I purchased my toddler carseat for a whopping $75 at Walmart earlier this year, so I was upset. I thought there was a small chance that whoever took it may have thought that I left the carseats there to signal that they were up for grabs, so I put up a few signs pleading for the carseat's return. If the taker was an innocent one, he or she would see my sign and return it. After several days went by and nobody called about the carseat, I realized that it had simply been stolen. I finally went and bought a replacement carseat on Craigslist because after several days, I could feel myself going insane from not being able to leave the house even after Chauncey came home--since we had no carseat for Maxwell.
Last night, exactly seven days after the thief made his or her move, the carseat showed up again right where I had left it. Did they take it innocently and then see my signs an return it? If so, why did it take them a whole week to return it--when my signs had been up all week (and were very crumpled by the day of the return)? Or did they steal it and then feel guilty knowing that they had robbed something that would keep a small child safe? Or did they feel guilty after seeing my sign day after day, begging them to return my carseat? Why did they wait a whole week before returning it? The case of the stolen carseat will remain an unsolved mystery.
